Decent Work Day

World Day for Decent Work raises awareness about the need for quality jobs, safe working environments, and social justice. The World Day for Decent Work was first observed on 7 October 2008 following an initiative by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). The observance was established to promote the concept of "decent work," introduced by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which emphasizes productive employment, fair income, workplace safety, social protection, and respect for workers' rights. Since its launch, trade unions and labor organizations around the world have used the day to advocate for better labor standards, gender equality, occupational safety, and stronger social protection systems. Today, the observance aligns closely with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8, encouraging sustainable economic growth and decent employment opportunities for all.

World Day for Decent Work has no religious significance and is observed as an international labor and social justice awareness day. Across cultures, honest work is respected as a means of supporting families, strengthening communities, and contributing to national development. The observance promotes universal values such as dignity, equality, fairness, inclusion, and respect for workers regardless of profession, nationality, gender, or background.
